Best ForBeginners, couples, families, small groups, and travelers looking for a short Himalayan trek with Kathmandu and Pokhara included
Trip Overview
Mardi Himal Trek stands out with some of the best trekking routes that provide another magical backdrop to Himalayan views, green hills, authentic local culture, and pleasant trails. It is ideally suited for moderate-level trekkers interested in a less commercially trafficked Himalayan experience. This adventure off the beaten track is a blend of nature and culture.
Mardi Himal Trek lies in the Annapurna region of Nepal, east of the Annapurna Base Camp trail and directly beneath the magnificent Machhapuchhre peak. Although it has become increasingly popular in recent years, it still feels quieter and more peaceful than many other treks in the region. That makes mardi himal trek perfect choice for travelers who want mountain beauty without the heavy crowd.
The Mardi Himal trek usually starts from Pokhara with a short drive to Kande, Dhampus, or Phedi. From there, the trail passes through small villages, terraced fields, and dense forests before climbing steadily toward Forest Camp, Low Camp, and High Camp. As you gain altitude, the landscape changes dramatically. Thick forests give way to grassy ridges, open slopes, and unforgettable mountain views.
The highlight of Mardi Himal trek is the early morning hike from High Camp to Mardi Himal View Point or Mardi Himal Base Camp. On a clear day, the view is spectacular. Machhapuchhre rises directly in front of you, while Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and other peaks dominate the skyline. The feeling of standing so close to these Himalayan giants is one of the most memorable parts of the entire journey.
Another reason why this Mardi Himal trek is so popular is that it fits many types of travelers. Mardi Himal trek is ideal for those who want a short but complete Himalayan holiday with trekking, mountain scenery, and easy logistics. Our 8-day Mardi Himal Trek itinerary includes arrival and departure in Kathmandu, flights to and from Pokhara, and a well-paced trekking route to Mardi Himal View Point or Base Camp. Our Mardi Himal trek package offers an excellent balance of comfort, scenery, altitude gain, and overall trekking experience.

Mardi Himal Trek Map and Altitude Profile
The Mardi Himal trek route map and altitude profile help trekkers understand the progression of the trail. The mardi himal trek route gradually climbs from the lower villages into forest camps, then rises more steeply toward High Camp and the viewpoint.
How Difficult Is the Mardi Himal Trek?
Mardi Himal Trek is generally considered an easy to moderate trek. It does not require technical climbing, ropes, or mountaineering experience. However, it still involves several days of uphill walking, some steep sections, and high-altitude trekking.
The hardest part of the trek is usually the early morning climb from High Camp to Mardi Himal View Point or Base Camp. This section is steeper, colder, and more physically demanding than the lower trail. The descent toward Siding can also be tough on the knees because it is steep in places.
For most fit beginners, the trek is achievable with the right pacing and preparation. If you are active, can walk for several hours a day, and are comfortable with stairs or hill walking, you can do this trek successfully.
Who Is This Mardi Himal Trek Suitable For?
first-time trekkers with decent fitness
active couples and small groups
families with trekking experience
photographers and nature lovers
experienced trekkers wanting a short Himalayan adventure
If you want a more relaxed experience, we can also design a longer version with a slower ascent.
Best Time for Mardi Himal Trek
The best time to do the Mardi Himal Trek is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November).
Spring (March to May)
Spring is one of the most beautiful seasons for the trek. The weather is mild, the skies are often clear, and the rhododendron forests are in bloom. This is a great season for photography and nature lovers.
Autumn (September to November)
Autumn is the most popular season because of stable weather and excellent mountain visibility. After the monsoon, the air is usually fresh and the views are crisp and clear.
Winter (December to February)
Winter trekking is possible, but temperatures are colder and there may be snow or ice in the upper sections. This season is best for trekkers who are comfortable in cold conditions.
Monsoon (June to August)
Monsoon is the least recommended season due to rain, muddy trails, leeches, and lower visibility. However, the forests are very lush and green, and the trail is quieter.
Permits Required for Mardi Himal Trek
To do the Mardi Himal Trek, trekkers usually need the following permits:
Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)
This permit is required for entry into the Annapurna Conservation Area.
TIMS Card
The Trekker’s Information Management System card is often required for trekking management and record keeping.
At Nepal Intrepid Treks, we arrange all necessary permits for you as part of the trekking package, so you do not need to worry about the paperwork.
Note: Permit rules and requirements can change. Always confirm the latest trekking regulations before publishing or selling the package.
Accommodation on the Mardi Himal Trek
Accommodation on the Mardi Himal Trek is in teahouses or lodges. These are simple, locally run mountain guesthouses that provide a bed, meals, and basic facilities.
In the lower parts of the trek, rooms are more comfortable and services are better. As you go higher, especially near High Camp, accommodation becomes more basic. Rooms are usually twin-sharing, and bathrooms are often shared.
Hot showers, charging, and Wi-Fi may be available in some places, but these usually cost extra. Despite the simplicity, teahouses are an important part of the trekking experience and offer a warm, authentic connection to local life.
Food and Drinks During the Mardi Himal Trek
Food on the Mardi Himal Trek is simple, filling, and designed for trekkers. The most common and recommended meal is dal bhat, a traditional Nepali set of rice, lentils, vegetables, and pickles. It is nutritious, satisfying, and widely available on the trail.
Other common food options include:
noodles
fried rice
soup
pasta
pancakes
Tibetan bread
eggs
potatoes
tea and coffee
Vegetarian meals are widely available and often the safest choice at higher altitude. You should also drink plenty of water throughout the trek. Carrying a reusable water bottle and purification method is recommended.
As with most Himalayan treks, food and drinks become more expensive higher up because everything has to be transported.
Is Mardi Himal Trek Suitable for Beginners and Families?
Yes, the Mardi Himal Trek is one of the better choices for beginners who want to experience trekking in Nepal. It is shorter than many major trekking routes and does not require technical skills. With a sensible itinerary and good fitness, many first-time trekkers complete it successfully.
It can also be suitable for families, especially families with active older children or parents who already enjoy hiking. The key is choosing the right pace. A slightly longer itinerary may be more comfortable for mixed-age groups or slower walkers.
If you are unsure whether this trek is right for you, send us your age, fitness level, and travel plans, and we can recommend the best version.

How many days do I need for Mardi Himal Trek?
Most trekkers can complete the Mardi Himal Trek in 5 trekking days from Pokhara, but our standard package is designed as an 8-day itinerary. This includes arrival in Kathmandu, flights to and from Pokhara, the trekking portion, and departure. The 8-day format is ideal for travelers who want a complete and comfortable experience without rushing the route.
If you are short on time and already have trekking experience, the route can be done in 3 or 4 days, but those versions are much more demanding because you have to walk longer hours and gain altitude faster. On the other hand, if you want a more relaxed pace, better acclimatization, or a more enjoyable family trip, you can stretch it to 6 or 7 days or combine it with other Annapurna routes. In most cases, 8 days itinerary is the sweet spot, especially for first-time trekkers.
Is Mardi Himal Trek difficult?
The Mardi Himal Trek is generally considered easy to moderate, not technically difficult. You do not need climbing skills, ropes, or mountaineering experience. However, it is still a real mountain trek, so you should expect several days of uphill walking, stone steps, narrow trail sections, and daily hikes of around 5 to 7 hours.
The hardest part of the trek is usually the climb from High Camp to Upper View Point or Mardi Himal Base Camp. That section is steeper, higher, colder, and more exposed than the lower trail. The final ascent can feel challenging because of altitude and the early morning start, but the reward is the dramatic close-up view of Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna range. The descent can also be tiring on the knees, especially if you return quickly through the Siding side.
Is Mardi Himal Trek suitable for beginners?
Yes, Mardi Himal Trek is one of the best short treks in Nepal for beginners, especially for people who are reasonably active and choose a sensible itinerary. It is shorter and less crowded than many classic treks, the trail is clear, teahouses are available along the route, and the scenery changes quickly from forest to alpine ridges, which makes the trek feel rewarding even for first-time hikers.
That said, “beginner-friendly” does not mean effortless. You should still prepare with some walking, stair climbing, or cardio exercise before the trip. If you are new to trekking, our 8-day itinerary with walking 5 trekking days is a comfortable and beginner-friendly option because it allows a better overall pace while including Kathmandu and Pokhara travel arrangements.
What is the highest point of the trek?
The highest point of the Mardi Himal Trek depends on how far you go on summit day. If you continue all the way, the highest point is Mardi Himal Base Camp at around 4,500 meters (about 14,763 feet). Many trekkers, however, stop earlier at Upper View Point, around 4,200 meters, because it already offers spectacular mountain views and is slightly easier and quicker to reach.
For many travelers, Upper View Point is enough because the panorama is already excellent, especially at sunrise. Reaching Base Camp is more rewarding if you want the full experience, but it adds more walking time and effort. So in practical terms, the trek usually tops out at either 4,200 m or 4,500 m, depending on your itinerary, weather, and fitness.
What permits do I need for Mardi Himal Trek?
The one permit you should treat as definitely required for Mardi Himal Trek is the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), because the trail lies inside the Annapurna Conservation Area. Nepal’s official NTNC permit system covers Annapurna Conservation Area permits online, which confirms that this is the main protected-area permit for the route.
The TIMS card is the part that causes confusion. Nepal Tourism Board still operates the TIMS system, and its official guidance says trekkers should check whether their route requires a guide and TIMS; it also lists many trekking routes where a licensed guide and agency-issued TIMS are mandatory. However, Annapurna routes are not named on that specific mandatory-routes list, and some current Annapurna operators report that ACAP is the permit most consistently enforced on Annapurna trails while TIMS practice can vary by route or checkpoint. Because of that, the safest advice is: assume ACAP is mandatory, and confirm the latest TIMS requirement with NTB or your trekking agency before departure.
What is the best time to do Mardi Himal Trek?
The best time to do Mardi Himal Trek is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These seasons usually offer the most stable weather, clearer skies, better mountain visibility, and more comfortable trekking temperatures. Spring is especially beautiful for rhododendron blooms, while autumn is often preferred for crisp post-monsoon views and drier trail conditions.
You can still trek in winter or monsoon, but conditions are less ideal. Winter can bring snow, ice, and colder mornings near High Camp and above. Monsoon brings rain, clouds, muddy sections, and lower visibility. So if your priority is the best combination of views, trail comfort, and overall experience, spring and autumn are the strongest choices.
Can I do Mardi Himal Trek without a guide?
This is the most important FAQ to answer carefully, because Nepal trekking rules can change and online advice is often inconsistent. Nepal Tourism Board’s current TIMS guidance says some trekking routes require a licensed trekking guide and agency-issued TIMS, but the list shown on the official page does not specifically include Annapurna routes. At the same time, current Annapurna-focused operators report that independent trekking in the Annapurna Conservation Area is still possible in practice, while enforcement around TIMS and solo trekking can vary.
So the safest answer is this: you may be able to do Mardi Himal without a guide, but you should not assume the rules are unchanged. Before you go, confirm the latest situation with the Nepal Tourism Board, ACAP/NTNC office, or a registered trekking agency in Pokhara or Kathmandu. Even if a guide is not strictly required on your departure date, hiring one is still a very good idea for navigation, safety, pace control, weather judgment, and local support.
What kind of accommodation is available?
Accommodation on the Mardi Himal Trek is mainly in teahouses and simple mountain lodges. These are locally run guesthouses that provide a bed, meals, and basic facilities for trekkers. In the lower part of the route, rooms are often more comfortable and services are better, while the higher you go, especially near High Camp, the accommodation becomes more basic.
Most rooms are twin-sharing, and bathrooms are often shared. Hot showers, charging, and Wi-Fi may be available in some places, but they are not always guaranteed and often cost extra. The comfort level is simple rather than luxurious, but for most trekkers that is part of the experience: warm meals, mountain views, and family-run teahouses along a beautiful trail.
Can I start the trek from Pokhara?
Yes. Most trekkers begin the walking part of the Mardi Himal Trek from the Pokhara side, usually after driving to Kande, Dhampus, or Phedi. In our standard 8-day package, the trip starts in Kathmandu, includes a flight to Pokhara, and then begins trekking from Kande.
This is one reason Mardi Himal is so popular: it is easy to access without needing a domestic flight. You can arrive in Pokhara, organize your permits and guide if needed, then start trekking the next day. For most travelers, Pokhara is the standard and most practical starting point.
Can you customize the itinerary?
Yes, the Mardi Himal Trek is very flexible and can be customized based on your fitness, budget, holiday length, and travel style. Shorter itineraries of 3 or 4 days are possible for strong and time-limited trekkers, while Our standard package is an 8-day itinerary, but the trekking route itself can still be customized into shorter or longer versions depending on your fitness, budget, and travel schedule. If you want a slower pace, more acclimatization, or extra village stays, the trek can also be extended to 6, 7, or more days.
You can also customize the trek by changing your start point, return route, accommodation style, or adding transport upgrades and nearby Annapurna extensions. In other words, Mardi Himal is not a one-size-fits-all trek. It can be adjusted to suit a solo traveler, couple, family, private group, or someone combining it with a longer Nepal trip.

Langtang Valley Trek and Blue Lake
Great responsible team, very careful and careful, so that you can rest assured in walking, is a good Nepalese hiking company (Nepal Intrepid Treks). This time I walk to Blue Lake Langtang Valley Trek, very beautiful, along the way there are forests, streams, canyons, glaciers, Tibetan Mani walls, turning wheels, Tibetan Fosta, five-coloured flags, lamas, bulls, sheep, strange birds, small wooden bridges and a safe solid railway bridge. There are beautiful colourful hills and tea houses, high snowstones, golden mountain sunshine, now let back home will miss a spiritual hiking holy road. I highly recommend everyone have the opportunity to go through Nepal Intrepid Treks and I would like to go with them again. Namaste and thank you so much.
EBC, Chola Pass and Gokyo Lake Trek in Nepal
3/28 ~ 4/15 from Taiwan to Nepal's Kathmandu, this walking route is EBC, Chola Pass and Gokyo Lake Trek, the scenery is beautiful, most of the weather is good, only GOKYO falls in several rows with a little snow, but no obstacles. It is less convenient to descend to Nansaki Poche Road due to melting snow, but it is still peaceful to walk slowly. This high mountain trip is a long way, but I have a feeling that I have made some progress, which is the success of over-the-counter 🙂EBC is a popular road trip in Nepal. From spring 3 to May, and from autumn 9 to November, there are fewer people walking gokyo for the season, but I believe that more people will travel this route in the future. In fact, I take high mountain fitness as a high mountain trip, I like to see human life at different altitudes, high mountain fitness does not need to compare flat mountain climbing ability, because there are people who are usually strong, but because the altitude and environmental adaptation influence physical and mental will also be difficult to predict what happens to retreat, on the contrary, the usual heart relaxation will also have unexpected gains, this is the usual mind, is also the reading of life, and the road to practice it as a method of meditation.Nepal is the home of Buddha, I love Buddha, I love Nepal. Walking is to get me to stand up and walk out and practice from the puddle, I will not compare, I will accept such as practicing sitting and sitting meditation.Nepal Intrepid Treks The company's guides and staff are very responsible, caring for the team, and everyone lives together like a family.Recommended for everyone visiting Nepal for reference, the Nepal Intrepid Treks company has many Nepal hiking routes, you can easily find the right hiking route for yourself.Namaste🙏🙏
