Trip Overview
The best-known and most rewarding high-altitude trek, the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek takes one on a 16-day journey from green, misty valleys and terraced fields to the barren, windswept lands of Manang and Mustang. Here, atypical detours such as trekking to Lake Tilicho, which is located at an altitude of 4,919 m, the highest lake in the world, before confronting the daunting Thorong La Pass at 5,416 m. Trekking is much more than altitude; it is cultural interaction, magnificent scenery, and raw thrills of running around in the Himalayas. For the professional who wants that extra memorable bit.
The Annapurna Circuit trek to Tilicho Lake is a high-altitude trekking trail in Nepal. The trek includes the renowned Annapurna Circuit and an exciting walk to Tilicho Lake. You will also hike to the deepest gorge of Kaligandaki. It takes you to Thorong La Pass (5,416 m), from where you have views of the beautiful Himalayas, like Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Manaslu. The trail is followed by a sea of green forest of rhododendrons, oaks, and bamboo, alongside which one can spot species of uncommon plants and animals. You’ll visit Muktinath Temple, a sacred place worshipped by Hindus and Buddhists.
Aside from magnificent views of the Himalayas with white tops and green hills, you can also get accustomed to the rural Nepali way of life and culture. You'll be camping out in a local teahouse along the route. But, though, the real magic isn't even the nuts views. It's the little things. It's salty butter tea that some elderly woman serves you in a tiny village. It's the taste of dal bhat after eight hours of hiking that makes you believe it is the greatest food ever invented. It's giggling with your guide, who has seen it all a hundred times but still points at a blue sheep with a grin.
The Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek allows you to experience one of the most breathtaking Himalayan adventures in Nepal. It's an adventure trek that suits adventure lovers. It's high-altitude, high-reward trekking—giving you something more than a trail, if you catch my drift.
Route Description
The Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek offers Nepal's most varied and rewarding trekking trail. It starts at mid-hills Jagat and then navigates its way upwards through river gorges, alpine forests, and isolated mountain villages before ultimately reaching the highest and finest scenery of the Himalayas.
The adventure starts with a road trip from Kathmandu to Jagat on a scenic drive into the Marsyangdi River valley—a door to Annapurna. The trekking route ascends from Jagat, the valleys of forest and rice paddy cultivated land, via Chamje, Tal, and Dharapani villages. The first demarcation line between old Gurung culture and the untouched nature of the nation is seen at once.
On ascending to Pisang and Chame, you start experiencing the landscape and vegetation shift. The climate is becoming cooler, and the landscape extends to present to you spectacular vistas of snow-white ridges like Annapurna II, Lamjung Himal, and Pisang Peak. The trail diverges at Pisang, and the higher route from Ghyaru and Ngawal is quite trendy for its mountain scenery and cultural variety.
Before reaching Manang, one of the most developed trekking villages, you're already well past 3,500 meters. You'll have to employ an acclimatization day here. This beautiful Himalayan village is encircled by giant peaks—Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, and Annapurna III—and features side treks, monasteries, and the Himalayan Rescue Association to offer experience to climbers with high-altitude safety.
Even before you arrive in Manang, one of the most developed trekking villages, you're already well above 3,500 meters. You will need to employ an acclimatization day here. This breathtaking Himalayan village has huge peaks around it—Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, and Annapurna III—and side treks, monasteries, and the Himalayan Rescue Association to offer climbers experience in high-altitude safety.
You will proceed downwards for a short distance to Siri Kharka and again come onto the main Annapurna Circuit trekking trail at Yak Kharka. The gentle ascent thereafter continues to Thorong Phedi, the starting point of the Thorong La Pass crossing.
The Thorong La (5,416m) pass crossing is the most thrilling and demanding segment of the trek. Thin air, cold dawn morning hours, and windy high-altitude climatic conditions make it worth having a once-in-a-lifetime Himalayan range scene from the summit.
Down from the pass is Muktinath's steep fall, a holy pilgrimage destination for Hindus and Buddhists. Infamously marked with holy fire and 108 jets of water, Muktinath is a spiritual and environmental change in the trek as well, from alpine desert to drier, more Tibetan-like regions of Lower Mustang.
Your trek concludes with a descent through the Kali Gandaki Valley to Jomsom, from where you’ll catch a scenic flight to Pokhara. After the rugged beauty of the mountains, Pokhara feels like paradise, offering lakeside relaxation, great food, and stunning views of the Annapurna range from a distance.

Good to Know
The Annapurna Circuit with the Tilicho Lake route
At 4,919m, Tilicho Lake is not only an altitude drama but also a spiritually consecrated place. The unearthly blue waters set against haunting, snow-shouldered cliffs are a spectacle to behold elsewhere in Nepal. It's a good side trip-less touristy, quieter, and richly rewarding.
Why Tilicho Lake Is So Special
Record altitude: Among the highest lakes in the world accessible by foot, no other trekking route lifts you to such an altitude in such natural beauty.
Exquisite setting: Breathtaking turquoise-water lake reflections abound from the snow-white mountain tops—a photographer’s fantasy.
Mythological importance: According to Hinduism, Tilicho Lake is present-day Kak Bhusundi Lake, a site mentioned in the Ramayana, which imparts spirituality to it.
Wild & Remote: The way to Tilicho Lake runs away across deserts of alpine wilderness, landslide zones, and ridiculously narrow cliffs for the adventurers who thirst for the raw.
Rare Wildlife Spotting: Himalayan blue sheep, eagles, or even snow leopards in adjacent areas are quite a frequent view.
Meals and Accommodation
Accommodation
Don't picture a fancy hotel. Think simple wooden lodges, or 'teahouses.' Down in the valleys, they can be surprisingly cozy, and you might even score a hot shower. But the higher you climb, the simpler it gets. We're talking about a bed in a plywood room, a shared bathroom down the hall that's... chilly. Your sleeping bag isn't a suggestion; it's your best friend. Bring a good one.
Staying Charged & Connected
Electricity is around, but you'll usually pay a bit to use it. Wi-Fi exists in bigger villages like Manang, but it's slow at best and often just doesn't work. The higher you go, the more you should just forget it exists. Seriously. A fully charged power bank and a headlamp is way more important than your phone's signal. They will never fail you.
Food
Get ready to live on dal bhat. That's rice, lentil soup, and some veggie curry. It's the fuel that runs the Himalayas, and the best part is, they'll keep refilling your plate until you tell them to stop. It’s a lifesaver. Sure, you can get noodles, momos, and even sad-looking pasta lower down. But once you get high, like at Tilicho Base Camp, your choices shrink to basically "dal bhat" or "noodle soup." That's it.
Bring your chocolate, nuts, and energy bars. That little Snickers bar on a cold afternoon will feel like the most luxurious thing on earth. And if you have special dietary needs? You're on your own. Pack what you need from Kathmandu, because you won't find it up there.
Best Time to Trek
Spring. March to May.
This is the one. This season is perfect for trekking in the Himalayas of Nepal. It’s when the world up there is just waking up. Down low, the forests are just stupid with color, all these reds and pinks. The air is clean, the sun’s got some heat in it again, and you get the breathtaking views without a traffic jam of people on the trail. It feels like you’ve got the mountains a little more to yourself. It's the smart choice.
Autumn. Mid-September to November.
Autumn is the most preferred season by all trekkers. The summer rains have washed all the crap out of the air, and the sky is so clear. The mountains look like they're etched in glass. It’s perfect, weather-wise. Stable. Dry. The only thing is, you’ll be sharing that perfection with a lot of other people. It’s busy. If you’re a social person and don’t mind a full teahouse, go for it. The views are epic.
Not Recommended
Winter: Look, unless you're a pro with serious winter gear who gets a kick out of real, life-threatening cold, just stay home. The high pass is buried in snow. It's not happening. It’s for a different breed of person, and maybe not a smart one.
The Monsoon (Summer): Why would you want to walk in the rain for three weeks? You won't see a damn thing but clouds. The trails get slick and muddy, and the leeches come out to play. Oh, and hillsides have a nasty habit of sliding away. It's just a miserable, dangerous, and pointless time to try.
How difficult is the Annapurna Circuit with the Tilicho Lake Trek?
This isn't a walk on the normal road. This is considered moderate to challenging in terms of difficulty. If you get winded walking up a flight of stairs, this isn't for you. It's a proper challenge that'll test your body and, more importantly, your head. Here’s the breakdown, no sugar-coating.
The Altitude
The walking is one thing, but the altitude is what will chew you up. You're going up to Tilicho Lake and then over the Thorong La Pass, which is stupidly high at 5,416 meters. Altitude sickness is real, and it doesn't care how fit you are. Those rest days in Manang? They're not a suggestion. They're what keeps you from getting dangerously sick.
The Grind
You're going to be walking for 5, 6, 7, or sometimes 8 hours a day. Every single day. And it’s not flat. It’s up, up, up, and then down, down, down on trails that your knees will hate you for. That path to Tilicho Base Camp? It’s a sketchy goat path on a pile of loose rocks that looks like it wants to slide down the mountain. You have to pay attention.
The Weather
You don't get a vote. The Himalayas do what they want. You can have a beautiful, sunny morning, and then an hour later, a soul-crushing wind just wants to push you over. It can snow on the pass even in trekking season. The ground isn't a nice, smooth path. It's rocks, and more rocks, and sometimes ice.
How Fit Do You Have to Be?
You don't have to be a pro mountaineer, no. But if you haven't put in the work before you go, you're going to suffer. Period. You need to be able to hike for hours with a pack on your back and not fall apart. Get on a stair-master. Go for long hikes with a pack on. Do some squats. If you show up with just city legs, the mountain will find you out real quick.

I joined Wildman's tour to Nepal for ABC trekking at the end of March, and during the trekking we were taken well care of by Nepal Intrepid Treks and Expedition. The local guides are professional, friendly and always know what we need before we ask for help, and the porters are honest and reliable. I believe that without their hard work, it is impossible for me to complete this amazing journey. A month has passed, the towering mountains, the blooming azaleas and the guides and porters’ dedication to their work are still vivid in my memory and it seems like only yesterday. Highly recommended!
